Virtual Couples Counselling
Couples counselling is helpful for relationships where partners are feelings misunderstood, unappreciated, and unsure of what to do next. Couples counselling can also be helpful for relationships that face difficulties due to neurodivergence, past affairs or trauma, and for relationships that are experiencing extreme stress (perhaps due to a new child, an upcoming wedding, or a death in the family).
Cammi works with couples using psychodynamic approaches as well as The Gottman Method. Psychodynamic approaches help explain how unconscious processes may affect your relationship, and how to work with these while in your relationship.
The Gottman Method (based on years of research) encourages an active and collaborative approach while giving us a clear path to follow and practical tools and interventions to implement along the way. Cammi has taken the three levels of Gottman training and continues to update her education regularly.
How Does Couples Counselling Work?
Step 1:
Assessing where the relationship is at in order to understand what to work on first.
This Involves:
- A 90 minute session with both partners together to explore your shared history.
- Each partner completing “The Gottman Check Up” (a series of questionnaires to understand the strengths and struggles each partner is having with the relationship)
- A 50 minute session with each partner separately to fully understand the nuances of the relationship.
- A 90 minute feedback session in which I go over what the assessment has revealed and what areas of the relationship need help. We will also discuss how to move forward in regards to scheduling and counselling.
Step 2:
Starting the work of counselling after having a thorough understanding of what areas of the relationship are struggling.
This involves regular sessions in which we work together through dialogue, psychoeducation, research based interventions, and personalized homework in order to help strengthen the relationship.
Step 3:
Slowly starting to phase out sessions as you start to feel more confident, and connected in your relationship.
We welcome couples from all types of relationships and are a sex positive and LGBTQIA2S+ allied practice.
